SDMX Json
« on: October 30, 2013, 10:58:43 AM »

Hi,

I searched the web for SDMX JSON and found this:

https://github.com/sdmx-twg/sdmx-prototype-json

I'm wondering if this is part of the standard or not and are there plans to support the JSON format and what is the progress.

Thanks in advance,

Duraid

Hi Duraid

The SDMX Technical Working Group (SDMX-TWG) is working on a new specification for SDMX-JSON data
exchange format and the github repository supports that work. Latest draft version is in folder draft-sdmx-json.

SDMX-JSON format works together with the SDMX RESTful Web Services API. It should assist developers to write
software that requests responses in JSON from SDMX RESTful API and processes the data and metadata in the
JSON response in order to produce data visualizations. Current version of the format focuses on
data visualisation and it supports all features of the SDMX RESTful API for data queries. There
are plans to support structural metadata queries for data discovery and data query in a later version.

There will be a public review process for the JSON format but we are happy to get any feedback
at any time. There was a short presentation about the format in the latest SDMX Global Conference.

Links to slides are available in the conference programme:
http://www.oecd.org/std/SDMX_Global%20Conference%2011-13%20September%202013%20Programme.pdf

There is also a live version of the presentation on Github (may not work in older browsers):

Cheers
Sami

Thank you Sami. This is a lot of useful information.

Do you have an idea about the timeline when it will be included in the standard?

I speculate that the SDMX RESTful API will need to be extended to support some of the features of the SDMX-JSON. For example, the client will be able to specify whether to get a flat or grouped dataset.
